This has been a special year for Inova Schar Heart and Vascular.

We are so grateful for the generous $75 million donation from Dwight and Martha Schar and were honored to change our name to Inova Schar Heart and Vascular in recognition of this transformational gift. Funding will be used to invest in people, enabling us to continue to recruit and retain top tier clinical talent, platforms used to improve cardiovascular care and programs that increase access to highly specialized care.

Acuity has remained high, and our clinical performance has risen to the challenge in a record-setting year for patient volume. We serve as a regional hub for cardiogenic shock services using our standardized protocols that have improved survival rates and become a model of care excellence for hospitals around the world. Our heart and lung transplantation, structural heart disease, electrophysiology, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), cardiac intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, and advanced lung disease programs are among the highest volume and most comprehensive in the country.

Throughout this report, we celebrate our successes and are pleased that our focus on innovation and commitment to outstanding patient care has allowed patients suffering from highly complex diseases to return to their family and friends and enjoy life.

As the details of this report demonstrate, we accomplish this through a highly collaborative, team-based model of multidisciplinary care that consistently produces high quality clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Our commitment to lifelong learning through active participation in research and innovation, as well as our dedication to safety and the highest quality patient care, creates a culture of collaboration and satisfaction among Inova team members and referring physicians with whom we have the privilege of partnering.

We are grateful for the exceptional philanthropic investment from the Schars. We also thank the D’Aniello family for their support of the atrial fibrillation (AFib) program, the Dudley family for their continued contributions and support of the Inova Dudley Family Center for Cardiovascular Innovation and Lola Reinsch for her family’s support of the Inova Reinsch Pierce Cardiomyopathy Program. We will honor these generous contributions and those of the many other donors by continuing to grow and expand our efforts to provide the best possible care for the patients we have the privilege to serve.
